Freshmen Rep Elections

Freshmen Rep Elections.png

On Monday, October 15, CIVIC will be electing our Freshmen Reps for the 2018-2019 school year.

What is a Freshmen Rep? What do they do? Don’t worry! All questions will be answered here and now.

Freshmen Reps have an extremely important role to play on the CIVIC e-board. They communicate with the freshman class and are in charge, in a large capacity, of outreach within the freshman class for the Spring GIM. Additionally, being a Freshmen Rep is a great way to gain an idea of how to run a club at Tufts and what it takes to be on the e-board of CIVIC in particular. Freshmen Reps will also be in charge of planning the policy challenge in the spring and, through this responsibility, will learn how to organize and advertise events, as well as help to put on one of CIVIC’s most important and complex events.

Beyond those specific duties, Freshmen Reps will help decide the weekly topic, offer perspective and advice on ways to improve the club, and become a part of the club leadership and learn about running CIVIC. Being a Freshman Rep is not the only way to be involved in the club and in the leadership, nor is it the only way to join the e-board in the future. There will be more elections in the winter and at the end of the spring semester - the only position for which you have to have served as an e-board member previously to run for is co-president.

We’re so excited about the enthusiasm we’ve seen so far and can’t wait to see what the Freshmen Reps can help us accomplish!

Upcoming Projects

Upcoming Projects_Blog Post.png

We are very excited about all that we have planned for this semester and the coming year as a whole. In this blog post, we will provide an overview of upcoming projects so that you have an idea of what we'll be up to beyond just planning meetings. We will continue to use Facebook as well as our events page to advertise future events, but feel free to refer to this post or our projects tab in order to better understand what we are planning.

Suggestions? Further questions? Feel free to CONTACT us at any point.

Policy Journal

The policy journal will consist of student policy related content.

CIVIC's Policy Journal is a new project that we will be launching this semester. It will consist of essays, research projects, opinion pieces, and other policy related content by students and for students. We will be accepting submissions on a rolling basis until late November. We encourage students to find topics which interest them and about which they are excited, and then to write a piece to be featured in our new Policy Journal. Essays and papers written for school assignments are absolutely encouraged, though we will cap the length around 5-8 pages. All political ideologies and topics are welcome and anyone of any year is welcome to submit!

Please note: CIVIC will be fact-checking all pieces selected for publication and the submissions will be chosen by e-board consensus.

Want to submit? Follow this link to be connected to the form!

Policy Challenge

Students divide into teams and have a set amount of time to submit a policy proposal on a given topic.

This year will mark the second Policy Challenge in CIVIC history, with a new topic, new participants, and new judges. The Policy Challenge is an event modeled after a hack-a-thon where students are given a set amount of time to solve a policy problem, generally with a university level focus. Each policy proposal will then be presented to a panel of judges selected for their work and study in that given area. Last year, the topic was about free speech at Tufts campus. Stay tuned to learn what this year's topic will be!

Want to be involved? Everyone is welcome! Apply to be part of the team putting this event together.

Bring conversation and debate to other college campuses today!

CIVIC is always looking to make more student-led discussion groups a fixture at other universities. We are currently working on expanding CIVIC's goals and language to other universities around the country and seeking to create a coalition of such organizations which can foster conversation and cooperation.

Know of a school or student who might be interested? Be sure to let us know!

Hello CIVIC members present & future!

We hope that you are as excited for our fall GIM as we are. We can't wait to see old and new members get together and learn what CIVIC is about and what our club has to offer. We have many exciting events, projects, and programs scheduled for the coming semester and we can't wait to launch new initiatives and continue to refine our club practices to best suit the needs of Tufts students. We hope you'll join us in this process!

Time: 8pm
Place: Eaton 201
Food: Pizza!

For our GIM, we would like to remind everyone of CIVIC's rules in order to ensure that we all get the most out of our meeting and out of this year. Let's do our best to create an environment in which opinions can develop, free speech can flourish, and students can feel comfortable discussing complex issues. If you would like to learn more about our meeting guidelines, you may click that link to see the page in full. In the meantime, we have attached the same graphic down below for your convenience.

We expect every member and attendee to behave towards others civilly, to respect the moderator, and to keep an open mind. We are always seeking to make improvements to our structure and if there are any concerns or questions, please feel free to address them to the e-board after the meeting or through our CONTACT channels after the fact.

Please see our events page to view more information about the upcoming GIM! We can't wait to see you there!
